War Burdens Matter For Pride, Not Complaint

-SIR CYRIL NEWALL [Special to “Northern Advocate”] NAPIER, This Day. “Never in history have people been more convinced that right is on our side. We are fighting literally for humanity against brutality,” said the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall), at a civic reception at Napier. “It is no good our sitting back and trusting in the justice of our cause to ensure our success. I regret to say that good does not always triumph in the fight over evil. _We are upholding civilisation against* bai’barism. “It is indeed a great privilege to be able to say simply that good is on our side. But, like any privilege that is a very great privilege, it carries with it an equally great responsibility. Must Decide Ourselves “This responsibility embraces all of us,- men and women, young and old, rich and poor. It is the duty of each one of us to do our full share in bearing the burdens we are called upon to share, and we must not wait for someone else to call upon us to do it. What these burdens are. we must decide individually. Once we have made up our minds what it is our duty to do. we must get down to it; but even this individual effort is not enough. We must co-oper-ate and work together as one team. If any of us thinks he is being called upon to bear heavier burdens than his neighbour, it is no reason for complaint; it Is rather a matter fer pride. Be Worthy Of Sons: “We have only got to remember those who have made the supreme sacrifice. Willing sacrifice is far more than anything attained by fear or force. We must give of our spare time; we must lend our money, and. if need be, we must even be prepared to give cur lives. We must not be disheartened about bad news. “It is this quality of determination to win through which we must all cultivate. Some of your sons have died in Greece and Crete. The Empire !s cause demanded that they lay down their lives and they did it willingly and gallantly. Others will return to this beautiful land. “We must see to it that when they do so they may have no cause to say or think that we let them down in the strugle in which they have risked everything for us.

“If we do our utmost willingly and now. we can save ourselves from the possibility of reproach—the humiliation of reproach from .those we love and honour.”

French Fleet. —The Vichy Admiralty yesterday denied reports circulated by correspondents of the German News Agency that the French fleet had sailed from Toulon.
