President’s Report

The president reported a successful year, both socially and financially. The lawns were opened for play by Mrs. Hayward, one of the foundation members, on October 5, 1940. Competitions were held and well patronised. During the season the Hayward Cup was competed for. There were big entries and keen competition by the members, who thoroughly enjoyed the matches. Two silver buttons were kindly presented to the club by Mesdames Stringer and Fairley, to be competed for by members witj,i 10 bisques and over. They were very much appreciated, and keenly contested. For the New Zealand Croquet Council Buttons, Kensington was defeated in the A grade, but won the E and C buttons.

The monthly all-day tournaments, card afternoons and evenings in aid of club funds had been well attended. Several card evenings were held in aid of Red Cross funds, and were well supported.

In July a sewing group was formed in connection with the Lady Galway Guild, members meeting in the pavilion once a fortnight. To September, 437 garments were despatched. Visits were received from Portland, Hikurangi, Whangarei, Kaikohe and Dargaville, and return visits paid, with the exception of Kaikohe and Dargaville, where transport was unavailable. The club received a kind invitation from the Waipu club, and members spent a most enjoyable day on the Waipu lawns. Thanks were given to the secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Stringer; to Mr. and Mrs. Stringer, who had put in a lot of time as green superintendents; to Mr. Clark, for the splendid condition of the lawns throughout the season; to Mrs. Fairley, for carrying out the duties of tea committee; to Mr. Fairley, for auditing the club’s books; and to all donors of donations and prizes.
