The recent assurance received by the Turkish Government from the Soviet Government on the basis of the Russo-Turkish Pact, was referred to in the House of Commons at question time, when the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler) recalled that the obligations of Turkey under her treaty of mutual assistance with Brifaii\.could not compel her to take action involving as its consequences armed conflict with the Soviet. Mr. Butler added that such a possibility would appear even further removed by the declaration of the Soviet Government, which he made clear, in a supplementary reply, was regarded by the British Government as eminently satisfactory.
