Whangarei Gifts For Navy, Air Force
The monthly meeting of the Naval and Air Force Sub-Committee of the Whangarei Patriotic Committee was held in the Mayor’s Room on Tuesday, Mrs W. Jones presiding. ,
It was reported that one case of mixed goods comprising 36 pairs of mittens, 22 pairs of seaboot stockings, 20 pullovers, 12 balaclavas and 12 scarves had been forwarded to the Navy League and one case of knitted goods comprising 58 scarves, 29 pullovers, 29 helmets, 23 pairs of socks, 10 pairs of gloves, 26 pairs of mittens, and two pairs of lambskin mittens had been forwarded to the National Patriotic Fund Board for Air Forces overseas.
The committee expressed appreciation of the assistance given by various organisations and residents cf the district.
It was decided unanimously to extend activities to embrace knitting for the Army and nurses.
During the afternoon, members presented Mrs Jones with a posy and a small birthday gift.
Social Afternoon.
The committee afterwards adjourned to the Town Hall where it entertained members of the Women's Activities the Sewing Committee, Lady Galway Guild and others at a social afternoon. Mrs Bines, of Matapouri, gave on interesting demonstration of home-spun wool and a spinning wheel and exhibited many specimens of home-dyed knitted articles. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Stevenson, Miss Steele and Miss Barber gave vocal items. Afternoon tea . was served cn the stage, which had been turned into a cosy lounge and artistically decorated.
