Repairs Needed To Library Building
The condition of the Library Building was the subject of a report to the Whangarei Borough Council at its monthly meeting last evening by the legal and finance committee which recommended that renovations should be considered with the estimates for the year ending March 31, 1942. The library, being a brick and concrete building, was not impervious to moisture where the concrete columns formed a bridge between the outside and inside walls, the building inspector stated in his report to the committee.
Moisture seeped through the outside bricks and found a - passage across the concrete columns, the inside walls thus being made damp, with the result that the plaster and paint were peeling off in places on the exposed north-east walls. Outside Treatment. It would seem a waste of money to replaster and paint the inside until the outside was made impervious. This could be done by either plastering the outside walls, which would detract from the appearance of the library, or by painting the outside walls with a preparation which would make them impervious. This preparation would not discolour the bricks and was not noticeable when applied. After this had been applied the inside could be attended to. The safe should be ventilated through the ceiling, stopping the damp, humid conditions which existed there at present. The price for treating with preparation the walls facing Cafler’s Avenue. Rust Avenue and Lovers’ Lane would be about £35. There was also a leak in either the roof or guttering above a corner of the newspaper room which should be attended to.
The report and recommendation were adopted.
