210,000 Benefit From Social Security

Under the various sections of the Social Security Act in the Dominion there are 210,000 beneficiaries, according to an announcement made by one of the commissioners (Mr J. H. Boyes) during an official visit to Rotorua yesterday.
Of these, 25,000 were in receipt of war pensions. Payments under the maternity section of the Act had been more numerous than estimated. Women On Staff.
Referring to the shortage of staff: faced by the Social Security Department, in common with other employers, Mr Boyes said the department had not appealed for any members balloted, and he did not think it would do so.
Replacements were being made by women, many of them married, and boys just leaving school. He recalled that during, the last War 80 per cent, of the staff's of the War Pensions Department had been women, few of whom v had had any previous commercial experience, but the work was carried on quite efficiently.
