Mangonui
On March 7 the natives of Kenena held a very successful dance and kap.a for the patriotic purposes, the sum of £3O being cleared. Mr J. Feisst was M.C. Dance music was provided by Mesdames Sid Reid .and W. Subritzky and Misses M. and B. Wrathall. Competitions resulted: Hat dance, Mr W. Fleming and Mrs Burgoyne; Monte Carlo waltz, Mr T. Matthews and Mrs J. Broughton; cake donated by Mrs H. Moffatt, Mr Scott; lucky game, Miss Mary Rahanuhi 1, Master Reid 2.
During the evening, Mr D. J. McKay, president of the Red Cross, thanked the Maoris for their great effort for patriotic funds. He then made a presentation to Gunner Mervyn Berghan, on behalf of the people of Kenana. The large crowd sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Personal. Mr J. H. Penney is visiting Auckland. *■ Gunner Berghan, who has been home on leave, left for camp on Saturday. He was .accompanied by his mother, Mrs E. J. Berghan. Mrs Noel Coulter, of Fairburns, is spending a few days in Mangonui. Private Leckner, who has been home on leave, has left for camp at Papakura. Miss Nellie Williams has returned to take up residence with her mother, Mrs L. Williams. Mrs Norman Kuhtz spent ,a few days last week at Waimate North, visiting her brother, Pte. lan Mackintosh, who has been home on leave. Miss Godfrey, of Kaitaia, was the guest of Mrs Peter Feeley last weekend. . Mr Ken Berghan is an inmate of the Kaitaia Hospital.
