Hokianga County Engineer’s Report

Referring to road maintenance in the Hokianga County, the county engineer reported as follows to the monthly meeting. Public Works Grants. Runaruna Road. —Owing to the break-down of the gr.ader, which is still out of commission, practically no work has been done to this road during the month. The metal contractor has spread and knapped 267£- cubic yards of stone. Flood Damage Country Roads. —A start has been made with the metalling of the Motukaraka-Mitimiti road and this work will be pushed ahead as fast as possible. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in securing trucks and it was for this reason that the work could not be undertaken sooner. The money available for this work is not nearly sufficient to restore the road to a reasonable condition and this is due to the authority not being received until nine months after application was made and to insufficient funds to carry out adequate maintenance. Inspection has been made of all the other roads included in this grant and it is recommended that application be made to transfer the sum of £lO3/10/- to the Motukaraka road to be made up as follows: Humanga road £SO, Kauapepe road £22/10/-, Mangatipa road £3l. The balance left on each road is sufficient to restore it to good condition because from time to time work has been carried out on these roads, and this work will be put in hand soon. The re-construction of the stone seawall on the Te Karaka Point Road with labour made available by the Native Department is well under way and will be completed this month. It is anticipated that a start will be made with the widening of the Wekaweka road about the end of the week. Main Highways.

Waimamaku-Ohaeawai. —A dry stone retaining wall has been erected at the big slip on the Omanaia side of Oue Junction which will have the effect of holding back the remainder of the slip; the road has been straightened up, graded and metalled. The approaches and deviation ,at Waima bridge have been completed and are being metalled. Practically the whole of the highway has been graded and one or two corners widened. Clearing scrub and general maintenance has been attended to. The Rawene-Oue Junction has been graded and several corners widened and improved. Culverts and watertables have received attention. On the Horeke-Okaihau road general maintenance was carried out but the Horeke end is very corrugated and the whole length requires grading. It has been arranged for this to be done by the Public Works grader as soon as possible. Kaitaia-Motukaraka. — Unfortunately the grader on the north side has been out of action during the whole of last month and all highways are rapidly beginning to break up and show signs of deterioration. Work on this highway has been confined to watertabling, culverts, improvement of vision and general maintenance. Comity Roads.

Scrub was cut on the Omahuta road, as instructed last meeting, and the following roads received attention: Takahue, Motukaraka, Whakapapa, Waikerikeri. The last mile and a half of the Horeke end of the HorekeTaheke road is particularly rough and requires re-surfacing; the estimated cost of the work would be £l2O.
