Kaitaia Town Board Meets
A meeting of the Kaitaia Town Board was held on Monday evening. Mr Lloyd Peace presided.
Extra Loan Money,
In reply to the board's application for permission to raise an additional 5 per cent, on the water supply loan, the board was informed that if it raised 5 per cent, now it could not raise a further 5 per cent, later on. The board was advised to apply for the full 10 per cent. now. The clerk said he had given as security for the loan the increase in the unimproved value, the increase being from £45,000 to £69,000. The department, however, required that a special rate be struck. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Mclntosh, to apply for the whole .10 per cent, on the loan and to strike a special rate as security of ,3d. Some Use at Last. Reporting on the month’s work, the foreman stated that Bell’s old bridge had been dismantled and the timber stacked for use on any future job. Replying to Mr McKinnon, the foreman said some of the timber would be suitable for repairs to the Parish Hall bridge. Mr Atkins gave particulars of what was required to be done to the bridge. The Public Works engineer thought that an expenditure of £lO or £ls would be all that is necessary. The timber from Bell’s bridge would be very useful for parts of the work.
Mr Archibald thought they should seek the co-operation of Mr Colebrook, drainage engineer, in getting labour. It was left with the clerk to consult Mr Colebrook, who is to be asked to carry out the work. Labour Problem. The town clerk, referring to the loss of one of the street staff, said the Social Security Department refused to give any assistance under Scheme 13. It was decided to Invite applications for the position of working foreman to replace Mr Whitefield. A committee consisting of the chairman, Mr Archibald and the town clerk was appointed to draw up conditions of work.
Provision was made for holding a special meeting of the board to deal with the applications if necessary. It was left with the town clerk to fill temporarily the foreman’s position.
Overdue Rates. A resolution was passed imposing the 10 per cent, penalty on all rates not paid by March 31. The town clerk placed before the meeting a list of ratepayers who had failed to pay their rates for a period of three years. Church Road Drainage. Referring to the Church Road drainage, Mr Archibald said that with Mr McKinnon he had conferred with Mr Colebrook, who had undertaken to consult his chief with a view to providing a remedy for the present unsatisfactory conditions. Mr Colebrook had a scheme which would give the required relief. Some pipes would have to be laid. The chairman: What will the cost to the board be? Mr McKinnon: Perhaps not anything. On the motion of Mr Mclntosh, it was decided to write to the Drainage Department, urging that the work be taken in hand. Insurance Basis. The chairman moved, and Mr Archibald seconded, that representations be made to the Underwriters’ Association with a view to having the town placed in a different class for fire insurance as the town now has a good water supply. <
