Australian Tribute To H.M.S. Leander

A telegram congratulating H.M.S. Leander on her success in destroying an Italian commerce raider in the Indian Ocean has been received by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) from the Acting Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Fadden). His message is: “On behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia I ask you to accept our warm congratulations upon the recent successful action of H.M.S. Leander against an Italian raider.

“We are indeed glad to know that the New Zealand Squadron is playing such a notable part in maintaining Britain’s command of the seas.

“The constant vigilance of the Empire’s naval arm will contribute greatly to our ultimate victory.”

Mr Fraser has sent the following reply: “I am much obliged to you for your telegram. The Government and people of New Zealand greatly value the goodwill of Australia and warmly appreciate your congratulations on the Leander’s success.

“It is a great satisfaction to us to know that New Zealand vessels are worthily playing then* part.”
