U.S. Women Leave Philippines
(Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, February 12.
It is announced in Manila that 400 wives and dependants of United States soldiers in the Philippines are returning to the United States within a week aboard a transport. It is understood six other army transports are en route to Manila, bringing supplies and .also reserve officers.
It is believed they will evacuate several hundred other dependants, The new reserve officers are needed in connection with the Philippine army, announcements calling up reserve officers on March 17 for a fortnight’s instruction.
The announcement affects 125,000 reservists, and indicates increasing United States supervision of Philippine army training. Five Jap. Warships in Siam Gulf. Five Japanese warships arrived today in the Gulf of Siam within Thai territorial waters, says a Bangkok message. A Japanese destroyer had previously arrived. The Japanese Cabinet Information Bureau announced that the Indo China-Thailand truce, which expired yesterday, had been extended to February 25. Both Governments accepted Japan’s suggestion for an extension of the truce.
It is stated in Chungking that China and Australia are considering an exchange o£ ministers in view of their commercial relations, and the new strategic positions in the Pacific.
Dutch East Indies
The Netherlands Government, in a statement, says Japan has made it clear that she now thoroughly understands ihat the economic discussions in Batavia are not being conducted by local authorities, bat a plenipotentiary of the Netherlands Government in London, ,md that the conduct of foreign relations rests solely on the central Government.
