Soldiers Should Come First
—MR COATES
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day.
That petrol should be provided for buses to convey soldiers from military camps to their homes was the opinion expressed today by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, member of the War Cabinet, when he was asked to comment on the refusal of licenses for buses to convey soldiers to and from the Papakura, Ngaruawahia and other military camps. Mr. Coates said his view was that the soldiers came first always. Their leave opportunities were very intermittent, and licenses for buses to convey them home should be granted. Mr. Coates said he was aware that some of the men could go by train to their homes, but this cost a soldier more, and in many instances took away a considerable part of his leave. He knew, also, that the situation concerning petrol supplies was difficult, but again, he said that the soldier should come first. He knew that his view was shared by these associated with him. He had no doubt that the situation would be speedily reconsidered.
