Sir John Lavery, Famous British Artist
LONDON, January 12. . The death has occurred of the famous artist, Sir John Lavery, R.A., aged 84 years. He was born at Belfast. His father was drowned in 1859 and his mother died three months later. After spending some years with a Glasgow photographer, he took up painting and went to London in 1879. From that time he made steady progress until he became one of the most famous British portrait painters. He was knighted in 1918 and was elected a Royal Academician in 1921.
