Whangarei Sportsman Takes 235 Lb. Marlin

Fishing from his own launch, the Meander, Mr S. Guest, of Whangarei, caught a striped marlin that turned the scales at 2351b5, when fishing off Cape Brett on January 4. Mr Guest and his party have just returned to Whangarei after a fortnight in Far Northern waters. A mako simultaneously took the baits of Mr Guest and Mr Alan Higgins, of Whangarei, who was also fishing from the Meander. It ran out with both lines, but at the first broach threw the two baits. Considering the number of fish seen during the expedition, Mr Higgins prophesies an exceptionally good season for big fish in the Bay of Islands. Ordinary line fishing was first rate, Mr Higgins added. Snapper and barracouta could be taken in any quantities and they were all large fish. One launch caught 170 snapper in a comparatively short time.
