Franco-German Negotiations Reported Resumed
VICHY. December 25.
It Is officially stated that FrancoGerman negotiations have been resumed where they were broken off by Laval’s dismissal. A Government spokesman added that the talks still aimed at FrancoGerman collaboration. The French were seeking the strictest compliance with the terms of the armistice and other existing treaties.
There were no new German demands. no German ultimatum, and no demand for the passage of troops across France.
The French Under-Secretary for Aviation (General Bergeret) has returned to Vichy from Syria. General de Gaulle, in a broadcast, urged Frenchmen in occupied and unoccupied France to remain indoors for an hour on January 1 as witness to “crushed France’s silent protest.” Marshal Petain. “exercising clemency" towards officers and non-com-missioned officers captured when General de Gaulle attempted to land at Dakar, is permitting them again to serve their country.
