The money value of daily retail sales in Britain in October was 6.8 per cent, above those of October, 1939. The only decline was in the London area. «■ * w « Hospital Accounts Correct. Notification that the accounts of the Whangarei Hospital Board for the year ended March 31, 1940, had been certified was received from the controller and auditor-general at the monthly meeting of the board today.

Fire at Chase’s Gorge. Strenuous efforts on the part of about 100 residents and visitors at the popular west coast holiday resort, Chase’s Gorge, yesterday afternoon saved three houses, the property of Messrs G. W. Bradley, J. Mclnnes and V. Matich. The houses were menaced by fire which spread rapidly through the flax and scrub. • «= * * Hospital Patients. Slight increase in the number of patients at the Whangarei Hospital was shown in the report of the medical superintendent (Dr. J. W. Hall) to the monthly meeting of the board today. Patients remaining at the end of October totalled 117, 293 were admitted during November, 278 were discharged, and three died, leaving 129 in the institution at the end of November. Maternity annexe figures, which were inclusive showed 17 in hospital at the end of October, 27 admitted during November, and 29 discharged, leaving 15 at the end of the month

New Governor-General. That the Dominion is fortunate in securing the services of Sir Cyril Newall as Governor-General is the opinion expressed by a New Zealander who has close personal knowledge of him. Writing to a friend in Wellington, he states: “I note in '•this morning’s paper that our Chief of Air Staff, Sir Cyril Newall, Is off to New Zealand as Governor-General. I have seen him a lot during the last year at the Air Ministry and I can only say that all the critical civilians-in-umform like myself have grown to like him immensely. He is a most charming man—simple, friendly and kind. New Zealand is indeed fortunate to get such a man.” * * «. * 4000 for Each Meal. More than 50 tons of those foodstuffs which form the base of the average daily diet are required each week to feed men of the Central District Mobilisation Camp, Trentham. Here up to 4000 sit down to each meal, and at times the number has been much greater. The most interesting feature of food statistics at the camp is the fall in the consumption of bread, butter, jam and cheese, and the increase in vegetables and fruit—oranges, bananas, apples and rhubarb, the lastnamed as a breakfast dish. The following quantities give an idea of the weekly food consumption; Bread, eight tons; meat, including small goods, 15 tons; potatoes, 10 tons; flour and butter, each two tons; onions, one ton; other vegetables, 18 tons; jam, 30001 b; sugar, 50001 b; fish, 30001 b; milk, 4000 gallons; fresh fruit, 250 cases. On an even division, therefore, each man in the camp now must get, directly or as part of some dish, a gallon of milk and a pound of butter a week.
