Council Meets Mangonui County

The Mangonui County Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. Mr C. J. Barriball presided. The Health Department wrote giving particulars of the provision made for meeting by the Government the cost of the treatment of sick and wounded "soldiers while: in hospital. Fencing a Road

A deputation, led by Mr Gun son, waited upon the council with regard to Churton’s road. Mr Gunson said that Mr Chur ton was on active service and had left him with power of attorney.

Certain obligations had been accepted with regard to the fencing of the road and there was not sufficient money in the estate to carry these out.

The chairman: We were to find the wire and Mr Churton was to find the posts and erect the fence. Mr Gunson: In that case, we will be able to carry out the agreement. The chairman: Mr Spanhake has some responsibility also. Mr Berghan laid before the council, to be forwarded to the Government, a petition in favour of the construction of a road from Ahipara to Awanui. In the petition, the Government was urged to make a special grant for the road, which, if made possible for vehicular traffic, would be a means of bringing under cultivation a large area of land.

It would also mean the opening up of a large area of Crown lands. The petition was signed by T. J. Fleming and 82 others.

Councillor Holder: If the road were put in, thousands of acres of land could be developed. Mr Torrie: The question of altering the line of the ( road ,so that, it would have a solid foundation would have to be investigated. It was decided to forward the petition as requested. Memorial Committee

Councillor Holder was appointed to represent the council on the Rest Room and Library Committee. ENGINEER’S REPORT

. The engineer in his monthly report stated , that road works had been held up to some extent by the unseasonable weather. Foundation work on Oturu' Road had been completed, but required trimming for metalling.

Most of the roads were in fair order. The main, road north had had a light grading, and some metal surfacing had been laid on the lower end. The West, Coast-Waipapakauri road had also been graded and patched with river shingle.

The Falcon grader was on its way to Herekino for the shaping up of the main highway between Herekino and Awaroa bridge prior to trimming up the riding road. Bridges oh the Kaingaroa—Fairburn road were urgently in need of painting and four bridges on the Herekino. road required cleaning and painting.

ThOse were over tidal creeks and apparently had been badly affected by salt water.. .

Route Investigation A thorough investigation of the best route for the Ahipara foreshore road was made in conferring with Cr. Berghan and Mr T.. .T. , Houston. Three, different routes were examined and it was decided that the best route was along the waterfront on the solid ground above the sand area and over the point in front of Mr Houston’s house.

The route would be practically clear of the sand menace, and was on easy grades and good alignment., . This location would upset the subdivision of sections as already laid out by Mr Houston, but it was considered cheaper to re-survey the sections on to the new road frontage than to take the road behind' the sections, where construction costs would be much higher, and the road would require fencing on. both .sides. . '

• The proposed new route would require fencing on one side only and the removal of a slaughterhouse.
