Subdivision Planned Ik Whangaruru Area
“The Native Land Court is anxious to go into the Whangaruru district as scon, as possible to subdivide the vast area of land in that locality,” wrote Judge F. C. V. Achesnn of the Court, to the Whangarei County Council today.
“This is being held up by the need for an engineering .survey of the deviation connecting the present surveyed road on the Tuparehuia Peninsula with the metalled road at Ngaiotonga,’’ lie stated. “The P.W.D. is unable to do or pay for this survey, but the district engineer suggested that the work be done by the county engineer if that cculd be dene by your council without expense to the Public Works Department. “On the road concerned the natives from timber royalties have voted a sum of £IOO for material costs in connection with the construction of the road, while it is understood that the Native Department is to recommend considerable free Maori labour being made available for the construction of this road.” Services of Engineer Judge Acheson then asked the council whether it would be possible to spare the services of the engineer (Mr J. Norris) for this work. He also stated in another letter that for road work in this area', the Maoris at a recent meeting had voted grants totalling £275, this money to come out of timber royalties due to the Maoris.
Discussion at the council meeting centred round the liabilty for maintenance of the road when it was constructed.
It was decided that, provided satisfactory arrangements could be made with the Native Department regarding maintenance of the road for a specified period, the council agree to the engineer carrying out the work cf survey, which it was expected would take three days.
