Eleven £so’s For Sick, Wounded Appeal

The joint committee of the Red Cross and St. John Societies reported this morning that an anonymous donor had this morning contributed the last of the £SO gifts needed to fulfil the conditions of Mr. L. P. Ford who offered to give £SO to the fund provided nine other people gave similar amounts. With the last of the guarantees given, the secretary (Mr. Hay) this morning called on other guarantors to collect cheques which will aggregate £SOO. Later this morning Mr. E. Wilkinson, manager of Wilkinson’s Bakeries, also made a gift of £SO to the fund. It was, he said, a personal gift and in no way a contribution of the business. Waipu’s Response “No waiting, no delay,” is apparently the motto at Wai'pu where a public meeting was called last night to elect a committee for the joint Red Cross-St. John appeal. Funds were needed, so Waipu departed from the usual practice, charged admission and followed the meeting with a dance. Grand result was that £8 10/- was immediately collected for the sick and wounded fund. The Queen of the North (Sister Collins), a Maid of Honour (Miss Zoe Ward) and the chairman (Mr. W. J. Court) and secretary (Mr. Hay) of the campaign committee were in attendance. In the absence of the riding member (Mr. A. J. McKay), Mr. Peat presided over an attendance of approximately 100. After giving details of the appeal, Mr. Court introduced Sister Collins to the gathering. Committee Elected. She spoke briefly on her experiences and stressed the need for ample funds to provide for the needs of sick and wounded soldiers. At the conclusion of the meeting a 1 committee of over 20 local residents was elected under the chairmanship of Mr. McKay. The committee discussed details of the campaign and representatives in each district were requested to make a house to house canvass. Arrangements were made for Sister Collins to address the meeting of local factory suppliers on Monday immediately prior to the luncheon interval. At the next Waipu sale a cattle drive in aid of the funds is to be made by two local stock agents.
