Northland Organising For Joint Appeal
Sister M. Collins. “Queen of the North,’’ returned to Whangarei last night after a triumphal flying visit to ! the Far Northern end of her territory. Everywhere she was received with great enthusiasm and was acquainted with steps already taken to further the combined Red Cross-St. John Appeal. Further organisation f *was undertaken and big developments are likely within the next few weeks. At the same time the Chairman of [ the Whangarei Committee, which is responsible for organising the whole of the province (Mr W. J. Court) toured the southern part of the territory, also receiving a most encouraging reception. Sister Collins’ Tour. iJ • 'Vr-. .. Leaving Whangarei on Monday, Sister Collins, who was accompanied by a member of the Central executive (Mrs. A. E. Knapp) first met the Kawakawa joint committee. The Kawakawa chairman (Dr. Frengley) reported that £SO had been banked already. A street stall last Friday yielded j £27, and a community sing £6. Activites in hand include a house to house collecion, a ball, further com-*j munity sings and a picture benefit. j The greatest thrill of the tour was at Kaitaia where £l3l 11/- and further j promises were contributed ina few i minutes at the annual meeting of the i local Red Cross sub-branch. i Yesterday Sister Collins conferred with Mrs. A. Edwards, secretary of the Kaikohe central executive, which controls sub-units at .Kerikeri, Okaihau, j Wnimate North, Pakaraka, Kaikohe, j Russell, Pnihia. Rawene. Whangaroa, j Kohukoliu, Waimamaku and Opononi. Mrs. Edwards reported that all j branches were putting forward satis-j factory efforts, and that a large sum was already in hand. | Wherever she travelled in the North Sister Collins was well known and j popular, Mrs. Knapp said today. ' Southern Districts. ■ At Warkworth, Mr W. J. Court found a well-organised local committee very active. £l5O having been raised to date. Strong committees have been arranged in all sub-centres around Webs ford, and the greatest enthusiasm is being displayed. Otamatoa and Hobson counties are making a wonderful response, Mr S. P. Dry reported. Permanent committees are functioning in every township and district, and a house-to-house collection is bringing in remarkable results. i
