“Advocate” Office, Water St.. Whangarei. Tuesday, May 28, 1940. Hello Everybody— Thanks to a Tapuhi Northlander, the S.P.’s rabbitskins are being transformed into something I hope will eventually be a cosy pair of slippers. I wonder if anyone else would be interested in the very simpie process of curing skins I was given? It can be used for calf or sheep skins as well as rabbit skins. Just in case, here it is: Stretch and tack the skins fur side down on a board. Clean as much of the fat and flesh off as can be removed without tearing the skin. Then pile thickly with woodashes and leave for a fortnight in a sheltered place. Rabbit skins, being thin, need be left only about a week. Should the ashes become damp, brush them off and replace with dry ash. At the end of the ash treatment, dust the skins and oil with any handy oil. My “helper” assures me she has used this method for years and it has always been completely successful. So if you’re interested, there it is. You may have noticed that Merit Cards are beginning to pop up again. It will be a while before we’re up-to-date with them, but watch that you get all you have earned. If in a few weeks’ time some are still missing, let me know the kind of contribution and if possible the date it was published. We plan to begin competitions again soon, but we’re trying to put our “Merit Card house” in order first. Cheerio till next week. Princess, Northland Tribe. F.S.
