Says Tawa No Good For Butter Boxes
[Special to “Northern Advocate ."J HAMILTON, This Day.
A suggestion made by tiie secretary of the Auckland Timber Workers' Union (Mr. F. Craig) that butter boxes could be made on a large scale from tawa was discounted as being impracticable by a representative of a large timber firm today. He said that tawa grew in small sizes and contained many flaws. It would be very expensive to mill, as the return of useable timber would not be more than 50 per cent. To use cleats and wire to reinforce the containers and to line the boxes with waxed cardboard would prove very expensive, even if the materials were available, which was doubtful. It was also doubtful if 13,000 feet of tawa, which would be required in the manufacture of 3000 boxes, a day. could be supplied.
