N.Z., South African Wool Prices Compared
[Special to "Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. A press message published on April 20 stated:—
“At the South African wool sales 64's averaged 33:;d per lb. Competition was very keen, with England and France the principal buyers.” The Minister for Marketing (Mr Nash) has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner in London (Mr Jordan), in reply to his inquiry regarding the above statement. “The South African price is on a clean basis, ndt greasy. The average price realised for greasy this season to the end of March was lljd, and the month of March the average was llid. “In the former period 64's yielded 45 to 55 per cent.” Equivalent N.Z. Rates. The Minister stated that these prices were quoted in sterling, and the equivalent in New Zealand currency would be from 14id to 14“ d. As the bulk of South African wool is fine Merino (94 per cent., as against 2 per cent, in New Zealand), the Dominion’s overall price of 12jd per lb for mainly crossbred wool compared very favourably with the South African realisation on the open market, in which all countries were competing.
