Turf Wickets At Kensington Park
Good progress is being made in the preparation of four turf wickets at Kensington Park. Three pitches have already been excavated and filled with three parts of mixed alluvial clay and silt from Weaver’s paddock and one part of volcanic soil, for binding. One wicket has been sown in Indian doobj, chewing’s fescue and brown top. The soil has been consolidated by use of the Whangarei Racing Club’s heavy roller, but it is debatable whether the three pitches already laid down will be ready for play next season. To obtain the required thick turf, watering and close cutting during the period of greatest growth may be necessary. The fourth pitch is to be turfed with sods of Waipu brown top. The Borough Engineer (Mr I. A. Cromie), who is in charge of operations, is being assisted by a committee from the Whangarei Cricket Association comprising Messrs C. H. G Heddit'ch, H. B. Massey ahd J. Leatherby, while the Agricultural Inspector (Mr E. B. Glanville) i's also furnishing ddvice.
