Finland Gulf Danger Zone, Nazi Shipping Warned
LONDON, April 28. The German radio tonight warned all German shipping that the Gulf of Finland is a danger zone and must not be entered.
This stated that the danger zone comprised two large minefields off the Estonian coast. The first zone was 20 miles by eight, and lay directly outside the port of Balt, which Russia leased from Estonia a few months ago. The second zone was 12 miles by six, and is situated eastward of Kolko Bay, nearly opposite Helsingfors. The German explanation is that the areas were mined by Finland during the Russo-Finnish war, and the mines became frozen in the ice. Now, as the ice is melting, they are coming loose from their anchorages. A Swedish report tells of a steamer of 3000 tons being mined between the Swedish coast and the Danish island of Sjaelland. The name of the vessel is unknown. An unknown steamer sank after striking a mine between Sweden and Zeeland. Britain Net Advised. Britain has not received formal notice of any minelaying in the Gulf of Finland, and it is, therefore, impossible to ascertain who is responsible. The Estonian radio station stated that the danger zone comprised two large minefields off the Estonian coast.
