Men Still Needed For 3rd Echelon
rSpecial to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
Although 30,000 men have enlisted for the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, men are still needed to fill the Third Echelon.
This has caused some misunderstanding recently. An analysis of enlistment figures on March 2 supplied to the Labour paper “The Standard,” explains how this situation exists and shows that at that date only 3565 men were available for posting to camp. A total of 29,521 men had enlisted to March 2.
They included 2658 enlistments for the Maori battalion.
Of the remainder, 20,828 had been classed as fit, 2493 as temporarily unfit, and 3521 as permanently unfit.
A total of 1794 men were in reserved occupations and were, therefore, not available for service, while 15.043 men had been sent to camp. The balance available for posting to camp was 3565.
