Presbyterians Unveil Church Memorial Cross
[Per Press Association. Copyright.] WELLINGTON, This Day, “This lona Cross should be more than a memorial; it should be a perpetual reminder to men that they cannot live by bread alone. “It should teach them also that unless religion is built into the very structure of national life that a nation will inevitably be doomed. “Our fathers have left to us a fair and glorious heritage. Let us try to be worthy of it.” These remarks were made by the Moderator of the Centennial General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (the Right Rev. J. Lawson Robinson) at the unveiling of the cross on Petonc Beach yesterday afternoon, to mark the place where 100 years ago the first Presbyterian church service in New Zealand was conducted. ■ Those taking part in the service a century ago were the first Scottish colonists to arrive in New Zealand by the Bengal Merchant, and the preacher was the Rev. John MacFarlane. The unveiling and dedication of the cross yesterday was carried out by the Moderator, and the Rev. A. B. Kilroy read the lesson. The service closed with the benediction by the Moderator.
