Italians Load German Coal
LONDON. February 20. The Minister of Economic Warfare, Mr. Ronald Hibbert Cross, was asked in the House of Commons today whether he was aware that 16 Italian ships in the last three weeks had been loading German coal at Rotterdam for shipment to Italy. In reply, Mr. Cross said he was aware of the fact, but naturally these vessels, although liable to search for enemy exports, had not been searched since they had not yet left port. He explained that the Government’s intention was to cause as little inconvenience as possible to neutrals. In this particular case time, which was now drawing to a close, had been allowed in which negotiations might take place to enable the Italians to obtain coal supplies from alternative sources.
