Australian Envoy Arrives In U.S.
(Received 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 21. Mr R. G. Casey, new Australian Minister to Washington, arrived at 11.45 p.m. and landed in a snowstorm, six hours 20 minutes late. His only welcomers were eight newspapermen, a cameraman and a radio broadcaster. The British Ambassador, the Marquess of Lothian and State Department officials had waited at the airport for an hour, after which Lord Lothian had arranged to meet Mr Casey today. Despite obvious tiredness Mr Casey freely answered the newsmen's questions, and made a brief broadcast over the West Coast network. His easy manner impressed the newspapermen favourably. Mr Casey’s first morning in Washington was devoted to press conferences and posing for news photographers. He stressed that he came without specific instructions on any specific subject, beyond working for the improvement of already happy relations. Newspapermen’s questions ranged from trade, which Mr Casey emphasised was not the main purpose of his mission, to Australia’s war economy and her vastly increased industrialisation, enabling unexpectedly great aid to Britain in supplying munitions.
