Sequel To New Year Revels

New Year revelries were responsible for charges against 10 Maoris, all under 21 years of age, of behaving in a disorderly manner at Awanui on January 1 last and each was convicted at the Kaitaia Magistrate's Court and fined £2 with costs and placed under the probation officer till the fines are paid. Evidence given by Constable Griffiths that he had interviewed the defendants, all of whom admitted the offence, which consisted of the placing of four forms across the street, rolling empty tar drums up and’ down the street, throwing stpnes on Hutley’s store and upsetting a heap of timber. Over 20 were present, but only defendants took part. The magistrate: Are there any serious aspects? Sergeant Bissett: No, it was just a foolish prank. Two were only 17 years of age and all were under 21.
