Rotary Club At the Rotary Club's weekly luncheon today, the secretary, Rotarian Rishworth, gave a history of the local club, this being in comformity with the anniversary celebration of Rotary International.
Fourth Unlawful Conversion For unlawful conversion of a car, the property of Puke Ngawaka, Kupe Penewi was sentenced at Kaitaia by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. This was stated to be accused’s fourth offence of that nature.
Young Woman’s Death. An inquest into the death in the Rawene Hospital on Saturday evening of Miss Jean Morrell, 26, of Waimamaku, was opened in the Rawene Court before the District Coroner (Mr Andrewes) and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given.
Power Cut Off. For ten minutes after noon today, residents of Maunu Road were without electrical power. The cause was a momentary fault on the Maunu supply line. Girl Hurt While Diving. Diving with two or three other girls in the Central Park swimming pool late yesterday afternoon, a High School girl, June Lorimer, received a cut under the chin requiring medical attention. As there are no obstacles in the vicinity of the diving board it is believed the girl was accidentally struck by one of her companions. # * * £ Bird Sanctuary The harbour board and the acclimatisation society are to hold a conference on March 14 to discuss the question of having the Whangftcei harbour declared a bird sanctuary. Invitations are being extended to other interested bodies, such as the Forestry Society, the societies for the protection of bird life, etc., while members of the public who may have useful suggestions to make will also be welcomed. Mistaken for the Pope. An amusing incident in the recent Eucharistic Congress was related by Mr Justice Callan at the opening of the new Franciscan friary in Auckland, to show that some people were not well informed about the Roman Catholic Church. He was marching as one of a guard of honour in the great procession through the streets of Wellington, he said. The streets being narrow, he passed quite close to the crowds’ that lined the route. As the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Panico, approached, he heard one woman say to another excitedly, “There he is! There he is! But did you know that the Pope was so young?”
