About twelve months ago I wrote to the County Council regarding h waste of rate money RATEPAYER’S on. a country road. COMPLAINT. The letter was brought up at a county meeting, and the engineer is reported to have said he did not understand what I meant, but he end the riding member were asked to look into the matter. However, neither he nor Cr. Stephen has been near the road, so I presume they do not want to know what I meant. —J. H. CARTER (Mangapai). One reads a lot about equality of sacrifice and pity for the men of the New Army. These men do*not need any pity; they need THE WAR our wholehearted supAPPEAL. port. Believe me, they 'have “something on us” —a mission of purpose to fulfill, and that is something to be very envious of. They also have the comradeship of men, a glorious and noble thing, and so lacking in ordinary shallow, materialistic life. Mothers, have no fear for your sons. Rather, be proud that they have found their place and mean to see the job through. Young men, young-older men, and old-young men, get to it; do your bit in what sphere you can, do away with any subversive attitude to right, and all will be well. This is no ordinary war. It is a war for an ennobling purpose. War has its compensations, too. In no circumstances are men brought so close together, heart to heart, revealing their innermost selves, as on the battlefield. And, now, a word for the “forgotten men” also. Many of these, twenty odd years after, are manfully doing their bit, under, in some cases, distressing circumstances. For mercy’s sake, do not pity these men. Give them your wholehearted understanding and help. Let there be no more forgotten men.—“JEM.”
