Swim Meet Again Shows Good Racing
Favoured by an ideal evening after a hot day, the Whangarei Swimming Club conducted another successful carnival in the school baths last night. Competitors revelled in the conditions and the large crowd of spectators also enjoyed the mild atmosphere. Racing was of good standard, the competitors showing improved form on previous carnivals, and the majority of events were keenly contested. Some of the swimmers, however, succeeded in beating the handicapper, and finishes, with a few exceptions, were not as close as earlier in the season. Alach’s 220yds Triumph. Principal interest centred in the 220yds championship of Northland, which drew a field of four. Haigh and Alach went into the lead on the first lap from Goodhue, of Kaikohe, and Nicholls, and in the third lap they had increased the margin slightly. Entering the fifth lap Alach headed the' field and he increased his lead to win comfortably in excellent time by seven yards from Haigh, who was two yards in front of Goodhue. Nicholls was a touch away fourth. To eliminate the necessity of conducting heats, the field for the men’s 50yds club championship was narrowed down to six leading competitors, J. Rice winning from Hayes and Howie in a great race in which only a yard separated all the swimmers. The intermediate boys’ 100yds championship also produced a great finish, with Mortimore swimming strongly to beat Hegley by inches, with Tebburt a foot away third, only two yards separating the whole field. Relay to Whangarei. Handicapped by the non-arrival of a car carrying competitors, the Kaikohe Club, which like Whangarei has been weakened by the enlistment of several prominent swimmers, had to include two girls in the relay team against the local club. Kaikohe proved to be no match for Whangarei, which won the event comfortably. Thanking the patrons for their continued support, the president of the Whangarei Club (Mr G. Reid) referred to the life-saving classes being conducted each Wednesday evening by Mr G. Thomas and appealed for more pupils to take the opportunity of acquiring valuable knowledge.
A life-saving event would be included on the programme of the next carnival early in March, he said. The president also referred to the enlistments of Messrs H. Fidler, N. Chissell, Provan and Bevington, all prominent Whangarei swimmers, and at his call cheers were given. Carnival Results. Tiny tots, boys, 25yds.—B. Calder 1, A. Simons 2. Time, 23 2-ss.
