Twenty-Five Years Ago
Germany’s blockade proclamation was taken to be the expression of that country’s exasperation over her ill-success , and was also regarded as an attempt to utilise the United States as a lever for loosening Britain’s hold on the sea. Austria was reported to be concentrating troops within ten days’ march of the Italian frontier. It was now' made clear that the attack on the Suez Canal was 7iot merely a reconnaisssance but a serious attempt by a large portion of the Turkish Army. Thirty thousand troops marched across the desert to a camp in the mountains, 30 miles from the Canal, and awaited the issue of the first assault. They rapidly retreated to a point 60 miles distant when they recognised the hopelessness of their cause. A zeppelin which got out of control was abandoned, by its crew, who jumped into the sea. Eleven of the crew were interned in West Jutland. At the reopening of the Italian Chamber of Deputies the populace of Rome demonstrated in favour of war and had to Be prevented, by troops from attacking the Austrian Embassy.
