Whence Go Surplus U.S. Exports To Neutrals?
NEW YORK, February 17. The sharp advances in United States shipments since the war began to five neutral States accessible to Germany have provoked' the suspicion that there are considerable leaks in the British blockade system, says the Washington correspondent of the "New York Times." Figures compiled by the Department of Commerce for January, 1940 and 1939, show that Italy and the Netherlands doubled their United States imports, Norway trebled them, and Switzerland quadrupled them. These were mainly products useful in war. The diversion of the normal trade routes to neutral countries is a factor in these figures.
