I Batting first at Mangapai, Puwera, \tfith eight men only, were all out for I as many runs. j Massey took seven wickets for I seven runs, and Horn the other at a cost of one. Mangapai replied with 52 (McAllister 10, B. Finlayson 21; Steedman took 3 for 26, Underwood 2 for 3). All out again for 31 (Cox Smith 10; Massey took 6 for 7), Puwera conceded an outright loss. During the afternoon Massey, who previously played for Portland in the Whangarei championships, took 13 wickets at a cost of 14 runs. Sporting Declaration. A sporting declaration by their skipper, Duncan Ross, cost Three Mile Bush a three-pointer at Springfield. Comfortably ahead on the first innings, Three Mile Bush made runs last, and declared with only half the team dismissed in their second strike. Needing 63 for victory in 40 minutes, Springfield batsmen used the long handle. A. Price was particularly severe on everything that came along, while L. Price hit the ball out of the ground on two occasions. Off one over from Ross, 19 were taken, and the winning hit was made five minutes before time. Three Mile Bush, 52 (Holt 23, Howie 10; G. Whittle took 3 for 22, L. Price 6 for 14); and 50 for five wickets declared (Whitelaw 17, Agnew 20). Springfield replied with 40 (C. Whittle 10, L. Whittle 14; Ross took 6 for 15, Holt 3 for 18); and 77 for one (G. Whittle 10, A. Price 40 not out, L. Price 26 not out). Hay-making caused One Tree Point’s inability to muster a team against Maungakaramea Hockey Club, who are agreeable to the fixture being played later in the season.
