Big Jump in Recruiting
After an exceptionally quiet period, enlistments from Northland for the Third Echelon of the Second Expeditionary Force jumped high yesterday, to register the best day’s recruiting since the start of the new year with a total of 16. The following enlistments were received at the Whangarei Army Office up to 3 p.m. today: Wellsford. —F. Exon (Matakana). Whangarei.—R. Bedingfield (Whangamumu). Kaikohe. —J. S. Smith (Kaeo), F. Sandin (Kawakawa). Kaitaia.—L. S. Smith (Awanui). The country centres have been outshining Whangarei in the number of recruits coming forward and yesterday both Dargaville and Kaitaia-areas easily eclipsed the town effort. Yesterday's response followed a quiet fortnight in which only a few recruits daily from the whole area have come forward. Additional recruits yesterday were: Whangarei.—J. Lynch (Hukerenui), T. C. Callaghan (Maromaku). Kaitaia.—W. A. C. Rippingale (Waihopo), B. S. Thompson, C. D. Thompson (Awanui), J. Thomas (Mangonui). Kaikohe.—J. Jones (Okaihau), M. J. Turner (Puketona).
