Russian Ship’s Mystery Gold Cargo
SAN FRANCISCO. February 7. Speculation was renewed today as to whether Manzanillo. Mexico, is a point for the transhipment of American copper destined for Germany, via the Siberian railway, when the Russian freighter Kim landed 5,600,000 dollars worth of gold. The captain announced that he would sail for Manzanillo tomorrow to load copper and would then proceed to Vladivostok. The gold was the Kim's sole cargo on her secret passage across the Pacific. It was consigned to the Chase National Bank, local officers of which state that they know nothing of the shipment nor what it is to buy. The Russian consulate has arranged for the guns of a United States Coastguard patrol boat to be trained on the gangways, and scores of armed police and coastguardsmen will surround the pier during the fours hours’ transfer of the gold to armoured cars. The Secretary to the Treasury (Mr H. Morgenthau) told a United Press representative that the Russian gold shipment was an ordinary everyday transaction. I understand the gold is for the Treasury.”
