Johnson Wins Buxton Shield

The annual tournament for the Buxton Shield was held at Kaitaia over the week-end.

Sixty-four players participated in the games. Kawakwa and Kaikohe were represented with three rinks, Rawene one, while the local club fielded nine teams.

A pleasing feature of the tournament was that each of the visiting teams met a local one in the first round, which immediately created a feeling of goodfellowship. It was regrettable that play in sections was confined to the same four rinks, necessitating players using the outside rinks more than once.

Both sections were won outright by Johnson’s and Stinson’s teams respectively.

Johnson suffered only one defeat, while Stinson came through with no scars.

Keen Final

The final match beween these two teams was keenly contested in a thorough sportsmanlike manner. Consistent good drawing by Johnson’s lead, McWatters was a feature of the game. Stinson opened the game with a one, Johnson retaliating with a three. On the twelfth head, Johnson stood with a credit of 14 and Stinson 7.

On the twentieth head the game stood, Johnson 18, Stinson 14. On the twenty-first head, when Stinson played his- last shot, he was four up, with Johnson to deliver his last bowl.

With a wonderful draw shot Johnson left his team with three to the good, the scoreboard reading Johnson 18, Stinson 15. Results:
