Dobson Mine Closed Down By Owners
[Per Press Association. Copyright ] \ GREYMOUTH, This Day. A new development in the dispute at the Dobson mine yesterday was the serving of notice to all members of the permanent staff, Mr C. C. Davis, of Christchurch, chairman of directors of Grey Valley Collieries, Ltd., said last night: “The industry just cannot stand any more of this nonsense, and it simply had to issue these notices. The matter is now in the lap of the gods.” Mr Davis added that there was no doubt that twelve months had to bo worked before the men were entitled to holiday pay. The disputes committee had reached a unanimous decision, but the men evidently refused to accept this arrangement. The company had been losing money for two or three years and. being unable to get a higher price for coal, could stand no further burden of ccsts. -3* Wallscml May Not Reopen Mr Davis said he understood there was a posibility of the Waffsend Mine closing for all time. There are 250 men employed at Dobson and. 200 at Wallsend. No prospects of a setlement of the dispute were indicated yesterday, and no new statement of the miners’ attitude was forthcoming.
