Special Police Force Arranged

Arrangements have been made for the establishment of a police station at Waitangi during the period of the celebrations. Several constables will be sent to Waitangi, and quarters on the ground

have been provided for them. Senior-Sergeant A. Elenderson, of Whangarei, who will be in charge, left for the North this afternoon. One of the main objects in establishing a temporary force there, in addition to assisting in the conduct of the celebrations, is to prevent intoxicating liquor being brought on to the ground. Little difficulty in this direction is anticipated, as the Maori leaders connected with the direction of the celebrations are anxious to avoid liquor being taken on the ground, and will be using their influence with their own people to see that nothing occurs to mar what is a historic occasion. While at Waitangi, the police will also give attention as required to other parts of the district. About 200 Maoris are engaged in preparatory work which, however, has been delayed by the practically continuous rain experienced since they went into camp. Before the end of next week, it is anticipated, about 5000 Maoris will be in camp at Waitangi.
