Rest Room For Kaitaia
A deputation representing the Patriotic Society waited on the Kaitaia Town Board on Monday night, with regard to the erection of a rest room. Mr R. A. Stewart said it was desired that they should get under way with their scheme so as to qualify for the present subsidy of £3OO. Mr F. Holder said he was quite satisfied that they could get the support needed if they would organise an appeal in the right way. _ He understood that plans and specifications had been prepared and if they could get an estimate of the cost they could get to work and raise the money. Mrs Buckle asked that something should be done in providing a memorial to the pioneer women of the district. If the board would give a lead she thought they would be able to raise the money. Patriotic Society's Wish. Mr Stewart: The general feeling was that the Patriotic Society would like to combine with the Town Board and form a strong committee with the object of getting the work done. He believed they could get support from Mangonui, Broadwood and Houhora if a lead was given. Mr R. Langley: At the patriotic meeting great disappointment was expressed that nothing had been done towards providing' a rest room. The board could count on the full support of the Businessmen’s Commit-
tec. Ready to Help. Mr Stewart: We came along to snow you that we are in eai’nest and are prepared to do our share. The location of the rest room could be considered when they had raised the money. Mr McKinnon said the only Centennial object approved was a rest j room. The estimated cost of the building was £I2OO, and the Governj ment subsidy would be £3OO. About £4OO was available from the old library. The Chairman: Roughly, £SOO would have to be raised. We should get the subsidy if we can, but it would be impossible to get the building erected in time to claim the subsidy. : Mr Stewart thought that if j the building was under way I the subsidy would be paid. Tic suggested that each district be asked to find a certain amount. Mr Holder: We could make the county ridings as separate districts for raising funds. Mr. Mclntosh: Owing to the war all people have an enormous impost on their earnings, and that is going j to grow, and the funds from which ! this increasing taxation would have |to be met would diminish. If there was any possibility of obtaining the subsidy ho was with the deputation in trying to get it, but ho was afraid the* task was beyond accomplishment. If theiv were any other funds which could he transferred to-the rest room fund they might be able to succeed. The cost, of building had increased, and what was estimated at £I2OO ! may cost £2GO or £3OO move now. | Quite at Sea.
The Chairman; We are quite at sea as yet about a section. If there was any chance of getting through with I the scheme he was in favour of callj ing a meeting of interested parties. Mr Stewart: We will never get anyj where if we don't make a start. Even j if wo can’t qualify for the subsidy, we 1 will, if we start raising money, gel | the nucleus of a fund for a building | later. Jt was absolutely necessary to i provide conveniences for women, j Mr McKinnon moved that the chairman convene a public meeting at an ■early date for the purpose of- considering the erection of a rest room for the town. Mr Mclntosh favoured a modified plan under which conveniences only for both sexes would be provided. The motion was seconded by Mr Mclntosh arid carried.
