A Well-Thrashed Subject
Views on the proposed rest room for Kaitaia are again being well aired. The latest move is by the Patriotic Society, which aims at making the rest room a Centennial memorial to the work of the old pioneers. The matter was brought before the Mangonui County Council on Wednesday by Councillor Holder, who said that the town board, though not enthusiastic about a rest room, had agreed to convene a meeting of all bodies and others, interested. The county was much interested in the project and should be represented at the meeting. Councillor Matthews said that whileacknowledging that a rest room was a necessity, he did not think it would be a suitable memorial to the early I settlers.
Councillor Holder: With a library and reading room attached, the building would be a very worthy memorial.
Councillor Vickers: It is the function of the town board to push for a rest room. The back-block settlers had heavy charges to meet in the distances they had. to travel and their visits to Kaitaia wore to the advantage of the business people. The chairman; A rest room is necessary, and while a number of county people are'-prepared to help, the responsibility should be the town board’s. Several members said that generous help could be expected from the country districts. Councillor Holdei;: The Women's Division is prepared to find £IOO. While the discusion was in progress, an intimation was received that the meeting of interested people had been fixed for Monday evening in the county chambers.
