The traffic inspector reported that for the quarter ended November 30, 101 heavy traffic licenses had been collected and for the quarter which commenced on December 1, 25 license fees had been collected. The council would be pleased to know that the Tokerau Land Board had now to pay a license, for its trucks and £24 17/ had been received for two months of the last quarter.
Alleged Obstruction
The Commissioner of Transport wrote stating that it had been reported that in an accident on the Kaitaia-Takahue road, involving a collision between two motor cars, the drivers’ view was obstructed by tea-tree. The letter was referred to the engineer.
Bridge Rebuilding
The clerk was instructed to take the necessary action with a view to borrowing the £ 15,000 required under the bridge re-building scheme. Dog Collars
Advice was received that the life of existing dog registrations had been extended till February 1, 1940, so as to permit time for the arrival of the approved remedy for hydatids. Rural Housing A circular was received from the State Advances Corporation drawing attention to the conditions on which loans could be obtained for rural housing. The active co-operation of local authorities in bringing about an improvement in rural housing was desired. The council, it was pointed out, could raise loans for the purpose of financing group housing schemes and very favourable terms were available. House for Employee Mr Walter Yadell, a member of the circuit’s outside staff, applied through the council for a Government loan of £BOO for the purpose of building a residence at Kaitaia. Councillor Holder: Are we going to do anything with regard to building homes? Councillor Matthews: Every case must be dealt with on its merits. In Mr Yadell’s case the dwelling would not be the property of the council and if he discontinued in the service of the council there would be no power to get possession of the house. Councillor Vickers: We could build Mr Yadell a house just as we did for other employees, but we must have control. On the motion of Councillor Holder, it was decided to inform the applicant that if the house was to belong to the county the council would do its best to enable him to obtain a loan. Appreciation A letter was received from Mr Norman L. Gurr expressing the appreciation of the settlers for the metalling done through the Ahipara Beach township. Aerodrome Permission to use the Waipapakauri aerodrome for a sports meeting on January 29 was asked in a letter from Mr Lister, secretary of the Waipapakauri Sports Club. On the motion of Councillor Shaw the request was granted, subject to the grass being cut on the racing track and all obstructions being removed in the event of a visit by an aeroplane. Holiday Closing It was suggested by Councillor Matthews that the county offices be closed from December 22 to the morning of January 8. He moved that this be done. It would be a fitting acknowledgment of the work the staff had done throughout the year. The motion was seconded by Councillor Vickers and carried.
At the close of the meeting the chairman wished all members of the council and the staff the compliments of the season.
Councillor Matthews acknowledged the good wishes on behalf of the councillors.
