Paderewski.—M. Paderewski, famous pianist and former Premier of Poland, has been appointed President of the Polish National Council, which will advise General Sikorski’s Government.
Wages.—The 'Government of South Africa has declined a request by trades unions for an automatic increase in all wages to offset the rising cost of living. It is stated that a wages increase would start an upward spiral of living costs.
Released.—The French trawlers, which were being detained in America, were released after assurances had been given that they were to be used commercially, not as naval auxiliaries.
Fight.—The Air Ministry announces that two coastal command aeroplanes yesterday attacked two Dornier flyingboats over the North Sea. The enemy’s rear gunners were hit and the Dorniers were damaged by machinegun fire before disappearing in the clouds.
Workers.—The Berlin radio stated today that Slovakia has agreed to supply Germany with 10,000 industrial workers and 25,000 agricultural workers next year. Espionage.—Four Italians, all Ger-man-born, have been arrested in Belgium on charges of espionage. They are alleged to have asked soldiers for information on troop movements and armaments.
OH.—Rumania has agreed to persistent German demands that she should increase her oil shipments to the Reich, and also that she should revalue the Reichmark.
