Butterfat Standard For Jersey Oaks

Reduction of the butterfat standard for heifers competing in the Dominion Jersey Oaks competition was recently advocated by the Whangarei Jersey Club. The present standard is 5501b5, which the Whangarei club suggested should be reduced to 5201b5, the same butterfat standard as for champion bulls.

The Oaks competition is judged annually on type and production. In respect to smaller Jersey Oaks competitions, for which the associations offers a subsidy of £4O, the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association agrees that a reduction, perhaps even to 5001bs would encourage competition. However, as several of these smaller competitions have been inaugurated already, the New’ Zealand Council does not intend to alter conditions this year, but proposes to review the position next season. For the £SOO Oaks the council does not intend to reduce the 5501 b standard, which is not considered too high for a national competition of this nature.
