It was love for his crossword puzzles that brought Davis Stern before Mr Levien, S.M., at the Police Court today in the first case of its kind to be heard in Auckland. Stern, who appeared on summons, was charged with committing mischief by wilfully damaging a copy of a newspaper, the property of the Auckland Public Library. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said Stex'n was seen cutting a crossword puzzle from the paper. £2 Reward Offered. “For some time past the library officials have had trouble wifh people cutting the paper,” said McHugh, “and they offered £2 reward for any person giving information that would lead to the apprehension of offenders. “One of the readers at the library saw Stern mutilate the paper and reported the matter.” Costs would be asked covering the £2 reward paid to the informant. Fined £l. The magistrate; How do you suggest that I can order him to pay the reward? I have no power to do that. Stern told Mr Levien that he did not realise the seriousness of the offence. He was fined £1 and 10/- costs.
