Raider Shot Down After Thrilling Fight
LONDON, November 29,
Royal Air Force fighters shot down a German plane on the Northumbrian coast. Life-boats and Royal Air Force machines searched the sea unsuccessfully for the raider. An Air Ministry bulletin stated that the raider, a German Heinkel, approached the north-east coast early in the morning and was intercepted and engaged by a Roj f al Air Force fighter. The Heinkel dived into the sea. Previously there had been a thrilling fight. The Heinkel waited until the fighter was within 400 yards before diving, with the rear gun
spitting a stream of tracer bullets. The fighter closed in and the Heinkel then dived towards the sea.
ft is believed that two British fighters engaged another Heinkel over a south-east Scottish town.
The Heinkel apparently escaped southward.
There was aerial activity near the Firth of Forth.
The total number of machines brought down since October 10 is at least 23.
