Death.—The death has occurred of Phillip Schneidemann, former German Chancellor.
Expenditure.—Sir John Simon, in the House of Commons, said the expenditure on war and other services was now equivalent to £2,400,000,000 a year, representing a two-thirds increase on pre-war spending. Lie. —The Admiralty announcement in reply to the German claim to have sunk a" 10,000-ton British cruiser was brief. It stated: “The German claim is devoid of truth.” Rumania. —“There will be no revision of Rumanian boundaries,” said the new Prime Minister (H. Tatarescu) in a radio broadcast. “We shall defend all we have inherited from our ancestors,” He also reaffirmed Rumania’s intention to remain neutral in the present war. , Soviet. —At the invitation of the Foreign Secretary (Viscount Halifax) the Soviet Ambassador in London (M. Maisky) called at the Foreign Office yesterday. The conversation was mainly concerned, it is understood, with the clarification of the Soviet policy. Capture?.—A French official communique says: “The German cargo steamers Trifels, (6198 tons) and Santa Fe (4627 tons) have been captured by warships on the high seas .and brought into French ports.” Guest.—The Secretary-General to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Numan Menemencioglu) has arrived in London as the guest of the British Government.
Resigning - .—The Chief of the Dutch Intelligence Service (Major-General van Oorschot), who sent Lieutenant Klop to accompany the British messengers, Captain Stevens and Mr Best, to Venlo, near the German-Dutch border, where they were kidnapped by the Gestapo on November 9, has announced that lie is resigning his post.
