P.W.D's Feat At Mangawai
[Svecial to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. The Public Works Department has just completed part of its task in bringing into productivity a waste of 2GDO acres of scrub and swamp at Mangawai. A total of 630 acres of well-grassed land from the former Mangawai kauri gum reserve has been handed over to the Lands Department. The undertaking for good periods employed about 50 men. After clearing away the scrub, huge gumholes with which the area was covered had to be filled, and this operation is still in progress, bulldozers being used for the work. About half the land was swamp, and drainage was a major work, there being now 20 miles of drains. Sunken timber, much of it kauri trunks, was disclosed. This has been removed, and suitable timber was used for fencing, of which there is now 15 miles.
